Description

Presenting an extraordinary complete set of 1956 J.J. Conway "Pike's Peak: Georgia Gulch, Colorado" tokens. This set is a remarkable numismatic collection that encapsulates a pivotal era in Colorado's mining history. Struck in 1956 using the original J.J. Conway & Company dies, carefully preserved in the collection of the State Historical Society of Colorado, these tokens carry a profound historical significance.

The dies, originally employed by Conway to strike private gold in Georgia Gulch, CO circa 1861, have been meticulously utilized for this restrike endeavor. This set includes both the $2.50, the $5 restrikes and the elusive $10 issue.

Crafted under the guidance of Dr. Nolie Mumey, these tokens pay homage to the 50th anniversary of the Denver Mint's establishment, tracing its lineage back to Clark, Gruber & Co., early Denver bankers and private minters. The tokens serve as a poignant reminder of Colorado's rich mining heritage, with ties to the Breckinridge District and the gold coinage activities of the J.J. Conway firm.

These tokens boast a rarity of only 200 total restrikes, with this set holding the distinction of being the TOP POP according to NGC, with none graded finer. A testament to meticulous craftsmanship, each token features a Liberty Head obverse, reminiscent of Federal coinage but distinguished with "UNION" on her coronet, alongside the year "1862." The reverse proudly bears the legend "PIKES PEAK FIVE DOLLARS" encircling a large "Showboat" 5.

Accompanied by historical insights and anecdotes, this collection offers not just numismatic treasures but also a window into the collaborative efforts between Dr. Mumey and Denver Mint Superintendent Alma Schneider, culminating in the issuance of these prestigious restrikes. Each token evokes the spirit of innovation and celebration that marked the Denver Mint's milestone anniversary, making this complete set a coveted addition to any discerning collector's portfolio.
