Description
Fast forward to the Civil War where the US Mint was preoccupied with packing up Charlotte, New Orleans, and Dahlonega to keep the Confederacy from federal equipment. This select proof was carefully minted in 1862, in the midst of the War. From an original mintage of 550 pieces, PCGS and NGC report modest population figures and this is in the middle of the surviving grade range. Gold toning covers much of the coin, with subdued rainbow toning around the periphery of both obverse and reverse. The cataloger believes this coin may have sat in a coin chest for decades, judging by the color patterns and rim toning. Sure to please, this would be a wonderful piece for a Civil War proof set.
